Frisk is able to see this memory just like they are able to see their friends inside Asriel. By calling out Asriel’s name, Frisk evokes Asriel’s earliest memory of Chara. Frisk uses their words and actions to help their friends remember them. The code in the game confirms that the memory belongs to Asriel, and this makes sense. While it is a common interpretation that the memory sequence in Asriel’s battle belongs to Chara, this is not the case.

He even understands if Frisk chooses not to forgive him. Most importantly, he apologizes and recognizes all the bad that he has done. He gives up fighting Frisk, breaks the barrier, and releases the monsters’ souls. The events after the battle also indicate that it is Asriel who is saved.
